St. Paul’s Heritage Appeal

Restoration of St Paul’s Church Geelong
With  the support of the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) we seek to raise $500,000 for the complete restoration of the historic church founded in 1851.

The iconic St Paul’s Anglican Church on  Latrobe Terrace has welcomed people in  Geelong since it was completed in 1854.  Built of Waurn Ponds bricks in the Early  English Gothic Revival style, it is enhanced by beautiful historic stained-glass windows which were recently restored.  The church and surrounds are recorded by the National Trust and are heritage listed by the Victorian Government.
The first sod of foundation was cut by The Honourable Charles J. La Trobe, Governor of Victoria, who just happened to be passing on an early morning horse ride in 1851.
The bell tower was completed in 1866. A  peal of 8 bronze bells from the famous  Whitechapel Foundry in London was purchased by public subscription.
St Paul’s has been loved and well cared for over the past 166 years. The original Penrhyn roof slates from Wales were replaced from the same quarry in 2006.
St. Paul’s fine organ was recently refurbished supporting the tradition of excellent choral music.
St Paul’s is an active caring congregation in the Geelong region, hosting fine musical recitals and concerts, preparing meals for the needy and presenting English conversation classes apart from its regular worship.  It is part of Geelong’s heritage and worthy of the support of the wider community.

The Chair of the National Trust of of Australia (Vic)Kristen Stegley OAM launched the appeal for $ 500,000  in the presence of Hon Christine Couzens MLA Geelong and Councillors Eddy Kontelj and Jim Mason. All the speakers emphasised the importance to the Geelong Community of this unique building.
